Wow! After reading a review of this hidden treasure in a recent Tape Op magazine, I hunted it down and figured it would be worth the [$] price tag. Well, it is worth the cost--but it's actually worth many times more. The SP-1 has become my new go-to mic for almost any application: vocals, electric guitar, acoustic, ukulele, percussion, bass, etc. I have about 6 or 7 mics, many of which I like a lot (including a ribbon and the MXL V67). I thought the SP-1 would be an average mic to break out every now and then, but I am completely blown away by the sound and its versatility. Most Chinese mics have a harsh top end which doesn't flatter my voice, but the SP-1 is somehow very smooth without having a dark, murky sound like some ribbons I've tried. I find I'm actually singing better, and every track sits very nicely in the mix. It is equally excellent mic'ing amps, reproducing low end, or capturing the tone of my Larrivee acoustic or ukulele (although it does help if you angle the mic off-axis to emphasize the treble a bit more).I can say this with all honestly--and I wouldn't say this about any other mic in my collection, even the ones that cost much more--I would be extremely happy if I paid $300 for this mic with the way it has performed so far. Kudos to Pro Sound for carrying this mic as it's getting harder to find. There's absolutely no excuse in the world not to pick up one or two of these diamonds on the rough right away!

I just wanted to point out to "DaBestRapperAlive" 3 spots below me. That the mic not working with Sony Acid is not the mics fault. As a matter of fact, it has nothing to do with the mic or the DAW. The mic has to be plugged into an interface that has phantom power for it to work. As do all mics of this type. So before you bash something, please understand how it works before you give it a bad review.

I own a small theatrical lighting and audion production company. I use these mics a lot for choirs and recording purposes. I have had 6 for 10 years with no problems yet. I have had to purchase more because they are in such high demand.

Having gone from radio station management with high-priced gear to working with cash-strapped nonprofit orgs, I am pleased to find this mic that I use with the "Blue Icicle" USB interface (also purchased here). Do a search about it and you find that some enthusiasts even pay hundreds of dollars to have this mic tweaked to perform very close to $2,000 models. Buy a couple, you won't regret It!

Four stars because I think this really is a good microphone. I did not, however, end up using it during my recording session that I had planned recently. I heard so much good about this microphone, but I couldn't use it due to radio station interference.. I can't blame the microphone for this, however, it just seems like my location is bad because I live right by some radio towers and I'm pretty sure I'm picking up a very strong signal. I'll amend this review once I figure out a solution for this problem.
I can't give the microphone five stars until I fully experience it, which I have yet to do.

Comments about MXL Marshall Microphones MXL MCA SP-1 Studio Condenser Microphone With Clip:
I'm using lots of standard mics like sennheiser 421, SM7/57/58, AKG 460, KM84, KM83, SE 5000, Fatheads, Beyer M160, EV 408/308/ RE 55, TS-1/2 etc. So I should know enough to mean what I say when I say this is a great mic. The cardiod pattern is very tight. Very smooth mid range. So far it's great on acoustic guitars, vocals and amps.
Some say the mount is flimsy, but I have had no problems.

I bought the SP1 microphone for my home studio as a quick fix to poor microphone quality. For it's low price i was surprised to find how heavy it actually is and i like it. The sound is clean and caused no problems so far. Paired with the "Micro-Power PS400", this mic matches the quality of any high priced microphone any day.

Comments about MXL Marshall Microphones MXL MCA SP-1 Studio Condenser Microphone With Clip:
I bought a pair on recommendation from TapeOp reviews and was I suprized! I ordered two more and another dozen for two friends who are ultra gear snobs. We ab'd them with several high end Neumanns and Akg mics, and they more than held their own. These mics are also very easy to upgrade the electronic components in, which makes them even more incredible at their price. AAA+
