Professional performance instrument for the modern keyboardist.

The Akai Professional MPK88 is a professional performance keyboard controller with MPC production controls. The MPK88 draws on the design of the popular MPK49, the first keyboard ever to features MPC pads. This first-of-its-kind keyboard is ideal for performance, starting with a premium, fully weighted, hammer-action keyboard, adding MPC pads, Q-Link controls, and a selection of MPC technologies. The MPK88 is born for the stage and is equally at home in the studio.

CREATIVE INPUT

MPK88 features an 88-key keyboard and 16 genuine MPC pads. The hammer-action keyboard is fully weighted and features aftertouch for expressive melodic control. The MPC pads are pressure and velocity-sensitive to capture every nuance of your creative concepts. The pads can access four banks of sounds, so you have 64 samples at your fingertips with the touch of a button.

The MPK88 places dedicated transport controls within your reach for easy control of some of the most important tracking and editing controls. The MPK88 has modulation and pitch-bend wheels for expressive musicality, and two assignable footswitch inputs enable you to connect an expression pedal or other continuous controller and a footswitch for momentary controls like patch change or start/stop.

Q-LINK COMMAND

One of the most important input devices on an MPC is its Q-Link assignable control section. Akai Pro built a massive collection of Q-Links into the MPK series. The MPK88 gives you eight virtual knobs that are assignable to control nearly any software parameter. You can control three different parameters per knob thanks to the knobs' three-bank selection, totaling 24 parameters of instant, hands-on control. Like the virtual knobs, eight virtual faders and eight virtual buttons also control three banks of parameters each, so you get 24 virtual faders and 24 virtual buttons. That's 72 Q-Link controls!

EXPRESSIVE ENGINE

Two technologies pioneered in the MPC series and built into the MPK series are MPC Note Repeat and MPC Swing. These note-modifying features can be heard in many of the most popular tracks over the last two decades. MPC Note Repeat is a capability that enables the MPK (or MPC) to automatically play a rhythm pattern, such as 16th notes on a hi-hat, for accuracy and speed of entry. MPC Swing is sometimes referred to as "the heart and soul of hip hop" because it turns perfectly aligned sequences into human feeling time alignments. You can specify exactly the degree and timing of swing you want to apply for the perfect feel.

The MPK88 has Key Split, enabling you to control two different sounds from the same keyboard. On top of MPC technologies, the MPK88 has its own arpeggiator, which enables you to create quick, creative riffs in seconds. Just pick a note or chord and a rhythm pattern in the arpeggiator's library and the MPK will play your notes in the rhythm and sequence you choose.

The MPK88 also has MPC Full Level and MPC 16-Level on its pads, as well as Tap Tempo and Time Division so you can nail the tempo, timing, and dynamics exactly as you hear them in your head.

can the mpk88 be used with pro-tools programs like structure and transfuser. will it line up and allow you to control all the vertual dials and controls from the mpk88's dials and controls?
Ronzoulla J. on Mar 24, 2010
BEST ANSWER: This is a midi control and it can be midi mapped for most any midi aplication.
Is this new or used?
allfusion on Sep 22, 2011
BEST ANSWER: This is a brand new, no finger prints.
Can the mpk88 be mapped and recognised by Reason 5 and Sonar?
Mantho on Feb 19, 2011
BEST ANSWER: Yes this would be able to be recognized by Reason and Sonar via midi mapping
I seen one answer saying that it is possible to use sampling like a MPC on the MPK88 but only with the incorporation of certain software, then I saw another answer suggesting that if you want to sample using your own music it would be best to get an MPC with a midi keyboard. My question is could the mpc like pads on the MPK88 be used like a MPC with the addition of certain software? I was confused thats why I mentioned the other answers that I had seen by customer service. Also when I mean "like an mpc" I mean with the ability to sample your own music or own personal sounds.
Ron on Jan 17, 2011
BEST ANSWER: Well the reason why its called a controller Ron is because that's what it's designed for, to control software or another midi instrument. You can sample, but only with the software that the MPK88 is controlling, So, if your using a software that doesn't have the ability to sample, you can't sample through the MPK88 itself. That's what the MPC can do. The MPK88 comes with Ableton, which allows you to sample, or you can use it with Propellerhead's Recycle, which is another great sample software. I hope this helped, if you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. You can reach me at dprado@pssl.com.
Does this product come with a foot pedal or do you have to buy it separately? If so where can I purchase one?
Bonaner on Dec 27, 2010
BEST ANSWER: no the foot pedal is not included you cand find a foot pedal at pssl.com
So if the pads are not for sampling what is it's main use? And is this Midi controller a ideal partner with Reason 5.0 to chop and make beats? Looking for something different other than an MPC.
Iwannamakebeats on Oct 22, 2010
BEST ANSWER: The Akai MPK88 MPC pads access four banks each for instant access to 64 samples. The Akai mpk88 works with most production softwares like Reason via MIDI.
I know its just a midi keyboard but can this be used as a sampler with some type of software? And if so is it the software that come with it or do I have to purchase another? and if what software would I need for the mpk88 to function like an mpc in my computer based studio.
Ronzoulla J. on Mar 28, 2010
BEST ANSWER: The MPK88 comes with Ableton Live Lite Akai Edition software which can be used in conjuction with the MPK88. Any software that features midi mapping can also be used with the MPK88.
As far as emulating the functions of MPC, this is something subjective however many people seem to prefer to use Ablelton Live with this product.
can this be used as a sampler?
Kobe on Mar 15, 2010
BEST ANSWER: Akai MPK88 Fully-Weighted Controller W/ MPC Pads is not a sampler, just a midi keyboard. Try looking into A MPC by Akai
with a midi keyboard connected.
can I use a song from my computer and remix it with this unit?
P on Feb 27, 2010
BEST ANSWER: Yes, although you will need some sort of software.

Awesome Keyboard Controller
Pros: Hammeraction touch,Full size keys,Durable,Well laid out

I am upgrading my studio and needed an 88 key controller. After looking around I happened upon this AKAI Professional model. I couldn't be more pleased. It worked as expected and is loaded with features. It will take some time to grow into the complete potential of this product. I am very happy with my purchase and received excellent customer service from PSSL.com.

First Look @MPK88
Pros: Excellent build quality,Deep Programmability
Cons: Vyzex Editor—glitchy,It's a monster 67 lbs

I use lots of VI's within my sequencer & also under the hood of a Kontakt Sampler. Many VI's are deeply programmable for expressiveness, so I picked the MPK as my dedicated MIDI Controller.

Since I'm obsessed with learning everything about my gear, I'm not quite there yet with the MPK. This is a first look and so far, so good. I like the build quality—not the weight—but I expected this with an 88 key. Also, I'm finding a similar complaint (as with all the MPK Series pads) regarding their lack of sensitivity (although I don't know if I'll attempt the modification the you can find easily described on YouTube).

I do plan to use all the functionality—(16!) pads, sliders, knobs—and each set of these has several layers of programmability. Also with the Vyzex Editor you can save Presets or entire sets as 30 Presets each, so your preset library will be endless.

The Yyzex Editor is glitchy I think, even with doing a simple 'save as' —sometimes it doesn't. I thought it might be because USB is sending data through multiple midi streams back & forth all at once but then using a (not included) power supply and standard midi cables didn't fix it either. It is on one hand intuitive software and on the other hand confusing software, especially when you can't be sure if you're doing something wrong or not... So, I'll stand by my initial feelings that it's really the software.

Here's another example to prove I didn't just give up: I installed the (Mac/Application Support/Library) codec(s) as described in the many PDF user manuals, but still couldn't get the MPK to talk to Reason 3.5 beyond simply playing keys and operating the 2 standard wheels. So the onboard Transport Functions didn't work with the Reason Preset selected (via the MPK—should be a no-brainer, right?). It wasn't until I used Reason's Overrides with the Vyzek software actually highlighted on 'Transport Panel' that the Reason Overrides finally were activated and able to save my overrides. So, I think you'll find it all works, but I sure do miss simple 'midi learn' buttons. I'm hoping some of my VI software with their 'midi learn' functions will work in the reverse with the MPK and I won't have to use the Vyzek software for this.

My experience with PSSL was great. They had the best price by far, even over other online stores I've used for years. And since they're in the LA area, I had my keyboard the very next day. Cool.

excellent product
Pros: Durable,Easy To Use
Cons: Bulky/Heavy,Pricey / Poor Value

I use this product to make beats
Its great because its so simple to setup and use.
everything is so organized.
But my only thing is I wish the beat pad was a bit softer
but I'm pretty sure it will loosen up over time
Such a wonderful MIDI control by akai
I'd recommend it for anyone with a home studio
Thank you akai and thank you pssl

big heavy super packed beast
Pros: Versatile,Easy To Use,Very solid feeling gear
Cons: Very heavy,Bulky/Heavy

This midi controller would be a great piece of gear if kept in the studio, I found it a bit much to lug around. Required two people to move comfortably without the risk of doing damage to the back or anything else if you twisted or bent wrong while trying to setup quickly. 67lbs plus another 30 or so for a good case. Great weighted keys, pads, sliders, knobs it's all there.
