Alto Transport 12 Battery Powered PA System

This compact, easily-Transportable unit solves the problem of delivering true high-fidelity sound even when there's no access to AC power. Transport 12 accomplishes this by operating for up to 8 hours off its built-in rechargeable lithium ion battery. The battery provides an AC cord-free power supply for its internal 400-watt digital Class D amplifier. The amplifier drives a high-output 12-inch 2-way speaker system in a compact, lightweight enclosure. The Transport 12 system can also be plugged into an AC outlet. This means it goes wherever there's a need for clear, punchy high-fidelity sound. Whether AC power is available or not, it's no problem for Transport 12. We understand that Transport 12 is likely to be used for spoken presentations and vocal musical performances, so we include a 100-channel UHF wireless microphone with an operating range of up to 250'. This system also has a built-in USB media player for playback of your customized playlist and a 1/4" output, for daisy-chaining additional Transports as needed to cover any size area with great sound.

You get more than you pay for
At this price point, I am genuinely amazed at how good this PA sounds considering that Alto throws in a Lithium battery bank into the deal.

Decent bass response, very punchy, while the vocals still come through really clear.

I can definitely say that the 6 to 8 hours of runtime per charge is not an exaggeration, if anything, perhaps it's a conservative estimate based on my own testing.

I'll probably buy a second one.

My only feature wish would be that Alto would create a product that would allow me to send radio to the built in receiver directly from a mixer (but they don't advertise such a feature so that doesn't earn a star decrease).

Excellent sound quality
My company needed a battery powered PA to augment our installed system. Sound quality for both speech and music was important, as was ease of use because the speaker will be used by folks with no experience with operating PA systems.

I demoed the few battery powered systems that are available locally: the Mackie and Samson systems sounded OK but didn’t have quite enough oomph to cover a fairly large outdoor area. The larger systems could get loud but the sound was thin and screechy. After listening to another Alto speaker (Truesonic TS-12 – shockingly good sound, especially considering the cost) I was prepared to take a chance on the Alto Transport 12.

Setup was easy: the wireless receiver is modular and slides securely into a bay on the rear of the speaker. Another bay is available for a 2nd wireless receiver (and maybe a radio link for a 2-speaker system, hint, hint Alto). Pairing the mic with the receiver took just a few seconds, and we were in business. The microphone holder slides into mounting holes on the speaker. The holder is poorly designed; I would not trust it to hold the microphone, especially when moving the unit.

The wireless UHF mic system has no audio dropouts out to 50' (haven't tested past that range). The mic feels solid and substantial but does have a bit of handling noise. The mic isolates well enough that audio feedback has not been an issue for us at moderate volume levels.

The tone controls are basic: bass and treble. I’d prefer at least a 4-band eq to help with microphone feedback if/when needed, but that would complicate things for inexperienced users and the sound quality is good enough that I never touched the controls.

Battery life has been excellent. We used it for music playback outdoors at moderate volume for 6 hours and it still had charge left.

The sound quality is quite good: clean, warm and smooth. Midrange is strong and clear but not shrill. Bass is good but not earth shaking, especially when used outdoors. The microphone reproduces vocals nicely: rich, full, and crisp. The sound quality was very close to the Denon Pro and matches well with our installed sound system (QSC speakers).

I would have liked a built-in Bluetooth receiver, but you can buy an external Bluetooth receiver for $20 - $30 on Amazon. Alto also sells a receiver ($50) that plugs into an XLR jack. I haven't used it but it's made for professional use and looks like it's very well built.

As other reviewers have mentioned a radio link between speakers would be a nice option; if there is sufficient demand perhaps Alto will offer one.
