If you’re like many DJs, entertainers and stage directors, you may be considering upgrading your light show with intelligent DMX effects. But the thought of using a DMX controller to run these high-tech lights may conjure up an image of a heavy, expensive light board that requires a Ph.D. to operate.

Think again! Elation Professional presents the DMX Programmer and DMX Operator Pro. Both are lightweight, affordable and innovative. And they are designed to make operating an intelligent light show a breeze.

The DMX Operator Pro is an innovative concept; a “hybrid” 2-in-1 controller that can be used both to control intelligent light fixtures and as a par can dimmer. 128 DMX channels can control eight intelligent fixtures (up to 16 channels each). It has another eight channels for dimming and turning par cans on and off. This is allows you to run all your stage lighting from one board, making the DMX Operator Pro ideal for moving into intelligent lighting. You can use it to operate your par cans now and “grow into” its other capabilities later.

The DMX Programmer is a 64-channel tabletop controller that can run eight intelligent lights with up to eight channels each. It weighs only 4.5 lbs., making it a perfect portable unit for mobile DJs and touring acts.

After test-driving the DMX Programmer and DMX Operator Pro, we concluded that Elation’s R&D people must have really had the light bulbs flashing in their brains. Both controllers contain some really ingenious features that will make life easier for lighting directors, whether you’re totally new to DMX or already have some experience.

Each unit features a joystick on the front panel designed to control the fixtures’ pan and tilt. With the joystick in your hands, maneuvering the lights becomes a snap – it’s much more convenient than pressing buttons. You can assign one or any number of the fixtures to the joystick via a user-friendly LCD display that guides you through the process. The LCD also helps you perform other functions, like program and edit your scenes and chases.

Another cool feature is compact flash card slot on the back of both controllers. You can insert a standard 32MB flash card (not included) and backup/store your programs onto it for future recall. This is a real time-saving convenience, because you don’t have to re-create programs for each show.

Both units have a fog trigger button that’s compatible with select fog machines from American DJ and both can operate in sync with audio input. You can also use the “tap sync” button to establish the running speed of a program. Elation’s designers were determined to leave no need or user-convenience unaddressed in what will undoubtedly become a standard for the next generation of DMX controllers.
