A gate can help clean up your mix and keep unwanted sounds out.
Normally you wouldnt gate a specific instrument or member of the band.
The most common things to use a gate on are the kick drum, hi hat, snare and cymbals depending on how often they are used. This is because you can clean up the drums by gating out bleed from the other drums and cymbals. EX: gate the kick drum mic to take out all the bleed from the toms, cymbals, hi hat, and snare. Which will give you that nice clean kick drum thump without the cymbals, snare or other instuments coming through. Make sure to set your gates accurately so you dont cut out parts or instruments you do want to hear. It can take time to set up a gate exactly how you want it.
I wouldnt recomend using a gate on the vocalist, bass, or guitar.Answered on 12/4/2012 by Patrick from Cypress, CA
