Bose L1 Compact Portable Line Array System

You've been searching for a portable speaker system that you can carry in a single trip, set up in a minute, and fill the room with premium sound. Sound familiar? If so, we'd like to introduce you to the Bose L1 Compact portable line array system, a fusion of conventional PA and monitors into one sleek unit unit. Weighing in at a laughably light 29 lbs, the L1 Compact delivers wide, even sound coverage up to about 180 degrees, maintaining sonic integrity even off to the extreme sides. It is small enough to fit in your trunk or back seat and as quick a setup as you can find, its innovative modular design playing a key role in its allure.

A different loudspeaker

Thanks to Bose Spatial Dispersion technology, the L1 Compact system's slim loudspeaker array distributes sound clearly and evenly throughout any room, its unusual vertical shape distinguishing it from convential PA speakers as as well having a profound effect on the sound coverage area. L1 Model I and Model II Loudspeakers project sound further with less volume dropoff than the L1 Compact however horizontal sound coverage is maintained in the same fashion.

Integrated system

Your days of carrying a separate mixer, amplifier, and bass cabinet are done, as they're already built into the L1 Compact. The system's power stand includes an integrated bass speaker and amplifier, plus a built-in mixer providing a total of four inputs and two outputs. Channel 1 is a microphone input with a customized ToneMatch preset for a handheld dynamic microphone. The preset automatically optimizes a handheld microphone's tone when used with the L1 Compact system. Channel 2 accepts up to three inputs at once, including a guitar, keyboard or other instrument, DJ mixer, MP3 player, laptop or projector. It features a customized ToneMatch preset to optimize the sound of an acoustic guitar.

The new L1 Compact system: audio performance, simplified setup and one-trip portability. Only from Bose.

Features:
  • Bose® Spatial Dispersion™ loudspeaker technology delivers sound evenly across the stage and throughout the audience-even to the extreme sides
  • Two ToneMatch® channels with fixed presets for a handheld microphone and an acoustic guitar
  • Integrated bass speaker in power stand
  • Two setup positions: collapsed for smaller spaces or extended for larger ones
  • Ideal for musical performances, mobile DJs, classrooms, business presentations and other events

Spatial Dispersion loudspeaker technology features six small drivers mounted at precise angles inside a slim, vertical enclosure. This proprietary Bose technology delivers nearly 180 degrees of horizontal sound coverage. Sound remains consistent even at extreme sides of the system. L1 Compact power stand features a built-in, two-channel mixer.

Integrated mixer in the power stand provides one microphone XLR input on channel 1; channel 2 has one instrument input, one RCA stereo input and one 1/8" stereo input.

I AM A DJ AND I JUST PURCHASED 2 BOSE L1 COMPACT SYSTEMS.IS THIS SYSTEM GOING TO GIVE ME ENOUGH POWER TO FILL THE ROOM
Duke on Jan 27, 2010
BEST ANSWER: This really depends on the size of the room and the amount of people occupying it. The Bose L1 is a great system and is usually powerful enough for most of our DJ's.
Can you use a laptop with the L1 Compact?
Angel on Mar 23, 2012
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you would just need to plug in the 1/8 in headphone output into the L1 system.
Is it correct you can get by using just one L1 system for a dj gig? How would you connect just one to a mixer?
null on May 25, 2011
BEST ANSWER: Yes this is correct. I'd suggest this for a dj gig of up to 200 people. The L1 system's clarity above and beyond other systems because of its range and the fact the sound doesn't change from different distance the way other 15inch speakers would.
Why does Bose conservatively say a venue of 100 People for the L1 Compact, but stated here 400-500 is fine. Which is it?
Rook on Dec 30, 2010
BEST ANSWER: FROM MANU'S INFO:
L1 COMPACT VENUE 100 PEOPLE.
I play in a small 2-3 person band and we perform at small venues/cafes that do not own any PA gear. We play a keyboard that we usually output both Left and Right channels, and we also run multiple mic's. At least 2 but sometimes 3. I'm wondering if one L1 Compact would be enough to fill a small venue and still sound good with that many inputs? I'm also wondering if there is a specific mixer that has to be used if I'm trying to achieve all of these inputs? Where would it plug in?
Chris on Aug 27, 2010
BEST ANSWER: Yes this is what this type of system was designed for. The inputs on the back of the unit are as follows:
Mic/line inputs (1 - 3) feature combination analog connectors accepting balanced XLR or unbalanced ¼" TRS audio cables.

Line inputs (4/5, L/R) for analog stereo connections to keyboards, mixers and computers. Inputs accept balanced ¼" TRS cable. Edit control affects both channels.

Bose makes a mixer espically for this system called, T1 ToneMatch Audio Engine For L1 System. The PSSL Item # is 73676.
what is the wattage for this system, can it handle a 500 people function?
null on Mar 3, 2010
BEST ANSWER: Bose L1 Compact Portable Line Array System Would be perfect for
about 400-500 people.
by having two l1 compact systems hooked up thru the mixer, will that give me twice the power and coverage.how many watts does this unit have?
duke the dj
Duke on Feb 20, 2010
BEST ANSWER: You can use 2 L1 systems at the same time with your mixer.
Each L1 system puts out 450 watts.
DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY WATTS THE L1 PUTS OUT? THANKS...BRYAN
BKEXPRESZ on Feb 6, 2010
BEST ANSWER: That's 750 watts in total for the L1 Classic and 500 watts total for the L1 Model I
I PURCHASED 2 SYSTEMS.I AM A DJ AND WAS TOLD THIS WILL BE ALL THE POWER THAT I WOULD NEED FOR MY GIGS.IS THAT TRUE?
Duke on Jan 28, 2010
BEST ANSWER: This really depends on the size of gigs that you DJ at. These systems are very powerful and are enough for all types of gigs.

L1 Compact exceeded my expectations..
Pros: Powerful,Attractive Design,Easy To Connect,Great Sound Quality,Crisp Sound

I took delivery of my L1 Compact about a month ago...I have basically been using it in my home and have taken it to various locations to test it out. I even took it to work (I am a paramedic full time) and amazed my co-workers with the sound quality. They found it unbelievable that a unit that size could produce such amazingly clear and crisp sound. Our ambulance station is fairly large and I had the gain control turned less than a quarter of the way up...the sound filled the room, in fact was a bit overwhelming so I had to make adjustments using the volume control on my laptop.
Now for the real test. I did my first gig with the L1 Compact this past weekend. I was a bit apprehensive and was almost tempted to bring a back up system along just in case the L1 didn't put out enough power to handle the room. The gig was an open house event at a local fire station. The room was a very large "barn type structure" used to house fire trucks. The fire apparatus had been pulled out and the room was outfitted with picnic tables, kids games, small carnival rides etc. My DJ rig was set up in the corner of the room..I positioned the L1 Compact in front of my table. I got to the event an hour early and after set-up there were only about 15 - 20 people there. I was a bit nervous when I did my sound check, afterall this wasn't a room with optimum acoustics. My system utilizes a single space rack mounted Rolls mic/source mixer which allows me to mix in 3 mics and several audio sources. I powered everything up and turned the volume on the L1 Compact up to half volume. I cued up a song, started the player on Traktor software and began raising the volume on the mixer. To my surprise, I filled the room with awesome "Bose quality" music and barely turned the mixer knob up to 1/4 volume. I breathed a sigh of relief. I knew then that my L1 was going to be more than enough PA for this event. As guests started to arrive, the ambient noise with all of the kids games, rides, etc was pretty high. I just kept tweaking the music volume to stay above the noise. There were no less than 200 people in the room throughout most of the event I did a walk around the room and was very pleased to find that the music coverage was very consistent. I had many positive comments about the sound and when I pointed to the L1 unit people generally took a double-take and say, "you mean all of that sound is coming from that?". I would just laugh and say, "Yeah, amazing isn't it".
The L1 Compact completely exceeded my expectations. The Bose company rates this product for venues of up to 100 people...I am here to tell you it will do way beyond that. I plan to purchase a second unit in a couple of months. This should be all of the sound reinforcment that I should ever need. I am just waiting to see how it will perform at an outdoor show. I am a very happy Bose customer.

l1 compact blew me away
Pros: Good Power Output,Easy Setup,Attractive Design,Easy to Mount,Great Sound Quality

I RECEIVED MY 2 L1 COMPACTS AND USED THEM FOR THE FIRST TIME FOR A DINNER DANCE FOR ABOUT 250 PEOPLE.THE SOUND WAS OUTSTANDING.IT WAS MORE THAN ENOUGH POWER FOR THE VENUE.THE AUDIENCE WAS ASTONISHED THAT ALL THAT SOUND CAME OUT OF THOSE SPEAKERS AND SO WAS I.
I AM GLAD THAT I DON'T HAVE TO CARRY MY 65 LB.SPEAKERS AND 40 LB.AMP ANYMORE.SETUP WAS A BREEZE.I DO NOT PLAN ON PLAYING AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN IN THE NEAR FUTURE,SO FOR ME THE L1'S ARE GOING TO BE FINE.THANK YOU BOSE FOR PRODUCING SUCH A GREAT PRODUCT.

wow
Pros: Easy Setup,Good Power Output,Great Sound Quality,Attractive Design,Easy to Mount

i purchased 2 L1 compact systems and used them for the first time yesterday.i played at an event that had 210 people ready to dance.they were not disappointed.the sound was crisp and clear.i thought it wouldn't have enough power but that was not the case ,i had power to spare.i am a d.j.and hooked up the units through my mixing board.i used the mike imputs in my mixing board.if you use the mike imputs on the unit you will only get vocals from one side.many quests could not believe the sound that came from the L1 units.also i didn't have to lug a 37 lb amp and 63 lb speakers.the units are quick and simple to set up.thank you bose for inventing a great product

Very disappointed, sounds like tin.
Pros: Easy To Set Up
Cons: Lack Of Power,Poor Sound Quality,Weak Bass

Received these as a gift, luckily I could return them which I did after 3 days of listening to what sounded like tin. Good things come from small packages, not in this case that's for sure.

Had to have another!
Pros: Attractive Design,Great Sound Quality,Easy To Set Up,Good Power Output
Cons: Weak Bass

I purchased an L1 compact a few months ago to be used for private (smaller venues) because of its size. The sound that comes out of this thing is awesome, but lacks some in the mids and low end punch. The mids issue was resolved by adding an EQ to tweek the mids and drop the highs some. Even though the L1 system produces equally dispersed sound everywhere in the room, I purchased a second one for stereo effect. BOSE has a great product for the buck. If they would produce a sub module like the units they have for the larger model 1&2 series that was compatible with the L1 I'd snap it up in a minute!! Additionally, when taking the pair out for a show recently, I realized that it took me longer to carry the equipment in than to set it up and tear it down!

Nothing compares to Bose sound quality
Pros: Great Sound Quality

I'm a dj who is just getting back into djing.I used the bose system for a birthday party at a bar and grill and was pleasantly surprised by the quality and fullness of the sound. I would love to have a 2nd one for bigger venues as well. Travel and set up was a breeze also. Thanks Bose

Great all the way around.
Pros: Easy to Mount,Easy To Set Up,Great Sound Quality,Good Power Output,Attractive Design

I have had another component system for years and this system takes less time to set up, less pieces, better sound and easier to transport. I use this for special events at store grand openings and I now have two of these units and unless they improve will not go back to anything else.

Absolutley Amazing

This is the perfect system for a portable PA system. It is light weight easy to set up and sounds great. Bose has done an outstanding job making a great sounding system at a reasonable price.

The right speaker for the right job
Pros: Easy To Set Up,Great Sound Quality,Attractive Design
Cons: Lack Of Power

I DJ'd with this for a group of 65 guests in a 40'x40' room. It did the job very nicely. It is what it is and will clip if you run it too hard. That's not what it's meant to do. This is going to be outstanding for outdoor wedding ceremonies and remote cocktail hour on a patio, etc. If you are looking for a DJ sound system that is similar, you may want the Bose L1 Model II. The sound was terrific in this Bose Compact and I am thrilled to have one.
