This distortion pedal has been used throughout history since its release in 1976. It was the main effects pedal used by Kurt Cobain for Nirvana's 1991 album, Nevermind, notably on the song Smells Like Teen Spirit.
Overall, I'd say it's pretty good if you want some grit, but there are definitely better pedals out there if you want to specialize in any particular genre of music. However, with a good amp, and a flexible attitude, this pedal can really work wonders. Not bad, and at a good price. I'd give it a thumbs up.
