    First off,

I understand people's frustration with DMX. It doesn't make sense at first, but once you get the hang of it, this board does everything it needs to do and more. I highly recommend this board for uplighting. Thanks to LED you can change your colors on the fly without the need for endless gel purchases to match your clients needs. I don't use everything to the extent that you can use it for but my main setup is 3 fixtures for 3 zones. I put 16 Freedom Par Quad 5's on fixture 1, 16 on fixture 2, and 8 on fixture 3. Fixture 1 and 2 are alternating colors to wash the event, fixture 3 is typically used for the entry way and whatever area I want to stand out. I set scenes to coordinate with different parts of the event.

For example, lets look at a how this applies for weddings. Fixtures one and two provide the main ambiance. Fixture 3 welcomes guests and draws their attention to the wedding party. Often times I get requests from Brides to match the dresses of their brides maids. I ask for a fabric sample in advance and use that color for some of the ambiance while guests are entering.

    Scenes for a wedding
    1. Entry hour while guests arrive
    2. Groom's entry
    3. Brides entry
    4. Main ceremony
    5. Hors d'oeuvres while the wedding party takes photos
    6. Reception with Father Daughter Dance and Best Man Speeches
    7. First Dance
    8. Dinner
    9. Dance time. (you can have a few difference scenes you switch between during this time to switch it up)
    10. Cooling down and Bride and Groom exit

The beauty of this system is you can do all the work ahead of time and during the wedding you just hang out and press buttons from time to time. Easy. Faders allow for easy adjustment in the event you need to do any on the fly color mixing.

For the price this is seriously the best thing you can ever invest in to get the most out of your uplighting rig.

Thanks for the simple unit Chauvet, I sweat less thanks to you.

Does a great job as far as controlling lights. Digital readout makes it easy to choose the correct channels. Able to handle a lot of lights (more than capable for a typical mobile DJ event). Programming capability.

Understanding DMX has a slight learning curve, and I still don't have a complete understanding of all the programming on the Obey. The Obey does not have the best housing quality. Some of the sliders and buttons seem loose. The power cord is short.

Great introduction to DMX. Most of the lights I already have are DMX compatible, but have used the on/off lighting controls until now. With the Obey, I've discovered so many more features with my old lights. To future gigs, I will probably bring less lights and just adjust the controls through DMX.

Comments about Chauvet DJ Chauvet Obey 40 Universal DMX Light Controller:

This is a great board for the money. It is easy to set up and does exactly what it claims to do. The only improvement I would suggest is a way to fade between scene selections. I tried everything and checked out several forums and this was a complaint multiple people had. Other than that, it is really a great board for the money.

This console is definely a starter. If you are a Lighting tech trying to have a backup console the obey 40 is not for you. I have a Elation Scene Setter I brought in 2004 that works circle around the Chauvet. I am exchanging this console for ADJ MyDMX... I hope this works out!

Well, first let me say, it does what its says it does. Nothing less and definitely nothing more. Te board is not bad for the price but, its not very friendly with moving head or scanning fixtures. The faders a very long refresh time so its difficult to make small adjustments. Creating chases is also a little wonky. If this is your first board you may not even notice the short comings but if you are used to higher end equipment you'll feel like your moving in slow motion. For the price its not a bad beginner/ backup piece, but I don't see any awards in the future for this board.

You can NOT first program all your scenes for fixture 1 then go back and program all your scenes for fixture 2 and so on.. and then have them play at the same time. You have to program each scene for all your lights at the same time. If you have several types of fixtures you want doing different things at the same time, It is almost impossible to program. Aslo it does not have the IEC fog controller it says it does.It has the button for it but they discontinued the output conection for it(even though they left the fog button). the only thing i like about it is that it has the beat activation.

it works, it seems to be reliable. the instruction book for running chases states to enter program mode to run chases. its obviously a misprint. not all functions are covered in the book so you have to fumble around until you figure it out. I never was able to get the tap sync to work. but its not really needed with the speed and fade sliders anyway. for the money its a cool toy but im sure there has to be something better.

Does this unit help to fine tune color selections on led lighting? I use 10 Venue thin par 64 lights, and I can't find a satisfactory purple color to use at wedding receptions. The programmed magenta is too pink.

Yes, as with all DMX controllers, this unit will allow you to fine tune your color mixing. I would also recommend dropping in a bit more blue when color mixing to get a more true magenta.

Manual describes how to access Scene Banks 1-15 via MIDI, but no mention on how to access Banks 16-30. User manual offers no assistance on these banks. How do I access Banks 16-30 via MIDI?

It would need to be a DMX cable. Its a three pin cable like a mic cable. The other thing is you have to make sure your fog machine is DMX compatible.

You would have to manually fade it. You can't set it to fade.

That first answer is terrible... sheesh. Yes, the obey 40 has a midi in port that allows you to switch banks and scenes ONLY. The midi commands (note on only) can come from any source... keyboard, sequencer AND midi drums as long as the drum hit is sending a "note on" command.
