In the course of my 19 years in the DJ business, I've used about 150 different pieces of gear. None have disappointed me so greatly as the Cortex HDC-1000. I bought two of these units about 18 months ago, and they have mis-performed almost identically.Where do I begin?These units skip, hang up and slow down mid-song for no apparent reason. An idle left bay will often jump to the middle of a cued selection. Track start is not instant, making beat-mixing difficult. On one unit, the "up" arrow button on the right bay no longer functions. Sometimes the units don't boot up at all.MOST IRRITATING QUIRK--After cueing a song, I pot up the channel fader for that bay. The unit, all on its own, starts going DUT-DUT-DUT-DUT-DUT-playing the first note of the song in a loop!! This happened again Saturday night (1 May '10) during the BRIDAL MARCH and was ABSOLUTELY the last straw!!Cortex tech support--[@] I spoke with Sam (ex. 6031), a pleasant fellow with few answers. Give it a shot, tho...HEY CORTEX!!This unit is SERIOUSLY FLAWED!! Please read the customer reviews, and include fixes in the next generation.

I've been using the Cortex HDC-1000 for about 20 months with only one problem one time that was easily remedied. All the bad things that I have read I have not experienced. I just wish you could always back out like on an iPod. And speaking of which: Why in the hell hasn't Apple/iPod come out with a professional rackmounted device?

The biggest draw back about this system is the reliability factor. I setup the product as specified and downloaded all the updates. Apon my first use of it at a show, I had to reboot the device twice in a three hour period. It simply stop playing from one side, then the output from the other side dropped off. The problems fixed after the reboot, but the need of reliable products for professionals DJs makes me say STAY AWAY from the cortex.

Item looks great but...after updating and downloading as instructed the device would not play but later after working it would cut off in the middle of the song for no apparent reason. Not good when you're actually DJing an event. Customer service sucks!!! I never got a call back or an email from Cortex after several attempts. What good is it to buy something and the manufacturer won't even offer professional assistance. Be careful on this one. You get what you pay for.

I really tried to like this unit. I can only base my experience using an iPod and when it worked, it worked great. The controls worked flawlessly and very easy access to files, although it would be nice to access the music faster. You can skip to the next letter using a 2 button method, but still tedious. The problem: it rebooted for no apparent reason during 2 gigs in the middle of the music. This was after I completed all the required updates and after the final update, the unit would not recognize the new music I added to the iPod.

For the price and the plug and play feature it should accept whatever usb device. It would not recognize my i-pod nor napster files. Should be simpler or I need a higher degree than a MBA to figure out the complexity.
