Comments about Cortex HdTT-5000 Table Top Music Controller:

The HDTT-5000, on paper, should be THE tabletop player. I mean, it looks great and has a lot of groundbreaking features. I had a pair for almost a year and really liked them. However, after dealing with all the little things that drove me steadily insane, I sold them.

First of all, the deck feels great and is very light. The platter is decent, although not close to a Pioneer. The features the 5000 has are plentiful and easily implemented.

However, what the 5000 fails at is everything behind the scenes. The database software is god awful and constantly freezes or just fails to database your music correctly. On top of that, you need to police your drive as if you're trying to kill the plague. NO other files can be on your drive (even hidden files), which is a pain when those files are added constantly. If you don't, your decks will freeze or just not work.

Also, I've had both decks stop working completely during a party.

Great idea but horrible implementation.

Comments about Cortex HdTT-5000 Table Top Music Controller:

Well when I bought these, I thought that it would change the way I DJ. Almost, but not quite. The biggest seller for me was the idea of having all my music on an external device that could easily be shared on both units. All my music is already in digital format and find CD's just as cumbersome as records. I also was never sold on the idea of lugging around a laptop that may or may not work as expected.... So the idea of having a system that will allow me to carry around all my music on a few USB drives was enticing.

The problem is not with that functionality, which works perfect if that is what's important to you. The problems I had with this unit is:

1) The jog wheel is not sensitive enough. I am not a scratch DJ, but I like to get down sometimes. I seem to have to apply an abnormal amount of pressure to make the song stop. I tried this on 2 units (I bought 2) so it is not about having a faulty unit. Compare this with a Pioneer, and you will see what I mean. As a test, I applied just a little bit of pressure on the jog wheel and spun it forward and backward, and the song just kept playing. Not expected behavior for me at least. It really bothers me more than I thought it would.

2) The user interface is not intuitive enough. It took me more than a few minutes trying to remember that I had to click on the loop, effects, or whatever button to get into that flow and click it again to resume normal play mode. For example, to use an effect, you have to click the effect button, then find the effect on the list of effects on the screen, then turn it on or off, then go to another screen to change the parameters to the effect. At that point, you are stuck with the effects screen and to get out of there I think you have to press effect again and/or play... I don't know, it's just not very intuitive. I don't want to get stuck in screens when I am trying to mix.

I give this a 3 because I really do like the idea of being able to mix soley off of mp3's and not have to lug around a laptop and deal with software and interaces.

I am getting a refund on these and wait for the Pioneer MEP-7000 to come out. That will give me the quality of Pioneer and the USB functionality I am looking for... Now if they only release a functioning CDJ-400 with USB or a CDJ-1000 mk4 with USB, I would be happy :)
