The HD2500 is well designed and has a great feel. It is fairly stratight forward to learn the basics and has plenty of options to keep tweakers happy for quite some time.
Unfortunately, Denon's initial release of the Denon Music Manager and the HD2500 firmware need to mature. Denon also needs to rethink their view that they can dictate to an existing industry what is a "good" MP3. Files that played fine in Virtual DJ, MixMeister, a Cortex device, and even a Vestax CDX-05 needed massaging for the Music Manager to use them. That does not meant that they will then play on the HD2500. The firmware is a bit finicky towards MP3 format.
With that said, I have used the HD2500 at one 4 hour gig and it played well. The sound is very good (except for some degredation when changing tempo with key lock enabled - this may be a firmware issue). Playlists work well and finding music is easy using the parameter knob in conjunction with the jog/scratch wheels.
Recommended, but either be prepared to do some work or wait for a couple versions of software/firmware.
Also, PSSL was fantastic to work with!

i have used this unit 2 nights so far and have mixed feelings about it, on one hand i dont need a laptop but the laptop is much more suited for larger music collections you can search for songs and artists much more easier. also the manual states do not use in a areas that have smoke because it may damage the unit, guess what i am a dj in a night club and people can still smoke in my area so i have to take my chances. so far the only thing that falls short for me is the non use of ntsf drives, and the denon software is at its current stage a joke. aside from that the item is very sound, so skipping or lag at all. oh and the power button is on the side and very hard to get to if rack mounted i dont know why they put it there at all.
pros no need for a laptop, external sound card, external controller, true instant start, onboard fx
cons does not support ntsf drives, searching is hard when you have thousands of songs and artists, the software needs major work, can not create folders for music to be stored on player, playlist can only be 100 songs, built in 40 gig hard drive (would liked it to be at least 120), power button, only 1 usb input.

Comments about Denon DN-HD2500 USB Pro Media Player & Controller:
We have used this since it came out and it is great. We use it with an external drive and a keyboard and have been very happy with the results. Most of our gigs are weddings and the fact that it still controls the CD player if we need it is perfect for us. The new updates have made it a better product. We like the F12 which lets us look for a word in the title. Over 200 jobs and counting and still very happy. Looking to buy a second.

Comments about Denon DN-HD2500 USB Pro Media Player & Controller:
I purchased this unit to play files directly off my ipod like with IDJ2, after the IDJ2 died (dropped). It was extremely limited since it will only play MP3 and Wav. files. Seems outdated since only 1/3 of my music is in that format. Was going to take it back, but I kept it and purchsed Virtual DJ for it. After a few tweaks (mapping), it works great for audio and vide mixing. Can't use Mp3 or hard drive capabilities since you can't switch seamlessly from one function to another. Overall, great buy as a controller, but would not recommend it if you're just starting out.

Comments about Denon DN-HD2500 USB Pro Media Player & Controller:
I have used this product for over a year now, and bottom line is that I am just about ready to put it in my second show. Lately it has froze up on me the past couple of times, but the more I think about it, I think that it is more likely the USB hub. It would be nice if there was a easier way to escape this but unfortuately the only thing you can do is shut it down and start it up. Not a good thing to do in when you have the dancefloor packed. Up until about 2 or 3 weeks ago from this posting, I hadn't had any problems with it. The software, like everyone says, probably could be a little better, but it really isn't that bad. Not only would I recommend it, I already have, to many other DJ's. I would get the Denon CD Drive to go with it, so you can always use your cds as back up.

Comments about Denon DN-HD2500 USB Pro Media Player & Controller:
For starters, the power switch is located in the back of the player. This is a problem for those who wish to mount in a cabinet or cofin. The system is easy to figure out and utilize as a simple cd player. However, the Tech assured me that it would work with my laptop and external hard drive, but after receiving this product and finding out that it does NOT work with my software and I have to reformat my system to FAT32, I am ready to return it. [...] Go figure. The fact that the tech did not know what he was talking about and that now I have to wipe my music off my hard drive and reformat to FAT32, I am wishing I had purchased another product. If your system is formatted to work with this product, than this is well worth every penny; however, take the time to find out all the info you can first.Again the product and desing are nice, however it is the complications with the software that is the biggest problem with this purchase.

Comments about Denon DN-HD2500 USB Pro Media Player & Controller:
At the current firmware v1004 the unit is extremely picky about MP3 files. Be aware all your files will need to be checked by using a miriad of programs for example (Tag and Rename or MP3 gain). BPM information will not show as well. You will need to convert this BPM info from Unicode to ASCII using Tag & Rename or other software. One bad MP3 file will get the unit in a jam fairly quick with no easy way out, except resetting.
One last thing: You cannot do searched based on string. For example: if you type "love" only songs that start with "love" at the beginning of the title will show. If the word "love" is somewhere else in the title it will not show this song as a result.
The unit does not read volume information so you would either have to run all your files through MP3Gain or manually adjust the volume as each file plays. This process takes a long time.
The software, Denon Music Manager, is a complete joke. It performs and looks like something that was written in DOS 15 years ago.
Denon includes a hard drive in the unit, but is only 40gb. If you decide to change it to a higher capacity drive you void your warranty.
Denon should have looked at Itunes or any other industry standard music program and create something as easy to use.
Better yet, Rane's Serato would have been a good starting point to look at.
You cannot create crates or playlists on the go like all other units out there.
These are the flaws that I have found from using the unit for about a month now. I have been using Serato for the past year and have never run into any issues whatsoever.
The unit's construction is superb and latency seems to be a thing of the past.
If Denon decides to fix these issues this would no doubt be the best MP3 player out there right now since the other players look like plastic toys.
Pros

Cons
