Comments about Denon DN-HS5500 Direct Drive Media Player/Controlr:
DN-HS5500 is a dual channel CD player that, as of 5/25/08, cannot be beat by ANY other product on the market today. With that said, I have a love hate relationship with it and its developers and will tell you why to buy or stay clear.
PROS:
- Best bang for the buck
- It’s virtually two units in One (Yes, you can rock a party with just one)
- Has effects that that sync to the beat - Like Pioneer's 800 mixer Color effects (minus Bit Crusher)
- Store songs on external hard drive (Internal hard drive not yet available 5/25/08 2008)
- Excellent people like Silvio explaining why things can or cannot be done in the 5500 in the Forums
- Optional CD Rom Drive
- Optional USB HUB (To connect multiple Hard drives, USB sticks, Keyboards)
- Mono Chromatic LCD screen. Great if using the DN-HS5500 as a single deck
- MIDI mode can control 3rd party software
- Scratching on the "Technics like" platter is first rate
- Denon has come out with the first firmware update rather quickly. (Within three months)
CONS:
- Even though Denon gives you the most for little. I feel that they have built a machine that may be a complete waste of you money. Ie, when used in MIDI mode, All effects are negated. It just becomes a deck like any other (with a moving platter). You only get the moving platter if the 3rd party software supports it natively.
- Two units in one can be tricky to handle at first (You Really want two individual 5500 decks)
- Effects cannot reach Pure Zero intensity Level (You cannot leave it on Like the Pioneer 800 mixer, because the bass drops out – even at the lowest intensity)
- Internal Drive sled sold separately (Denon’s web site originally stated that it was included when I bought mine)
- Asking for improvements can sometimes be like asking for a miracle. You have to complain way too much in the forums to get someone to believe you about a flaw or to get something looked at.
- High price CD “option” is ridiculous… especially when it ONLY reads audio CDs. No mp3, no wav, no dvd. Also, the Drive is placed to the right of the unit… Making a case you already own obsolete.
- Optional usb hub MUST be powered. This is something that should have been built in the unit so that we don’t have to carry around an extra Hub and bulky power supply.
- Screen too small for dual use… Can be confusing at times when switching between layers (Deck audio source)
- Going through folders or file structure is painfully SLOW! If there are too many files in a folder, expect to wait for the lag time between button pushes. It would have been EXTREMELY helpful to be able to search for songs and have them displayed as you type. Unfortunately, you have to correctly spell everything out first. Also, as you back up out folders, the other folders within disappear. You have to back up out of two previous folders and re-inter to see the other files. Denon forums say this will NEVER be fixed do to the structure of their hardware.
- While in MIDI MODE, if you want to switch back to normal mode, it will take about four minutes for a complete reboot. It’s NOT instant like when you switch from standard to Midi mode. Also, the spinning platter is not supported by all third party software.
BOTTOM LINE:
As of 5/25/08 I’m very happy with my purchase. I currently use my unit as a standalone deck and DO NOT use Serato or computers via time code or MIDI. However, this is something I’d like to look into. The problem is that in midi mode, practically all features that were built for the unit will disappear. And for the price, that becomes a waste of money… especially when you really should use TWO separate decks. I just cannot justify buying a second one; due to the price.
- If you only intend on using the DN-HS5500 as a midi controller, I would stay clear. You could get a different controller for 1/3rd the price and have plenty more buttons at your disposal.
- If you need a spinning platter, this was the hottest player since February of 2008. However, Numark has an all in one unit (with two spinning platters and a mixer) coming right around the corner. It might be wise to wait and compare.
- If you are going to use the DN-HS5500 as a standalone, there’s NOTHING better (as of writing this review 5/25/08).

Comments about Denon DN-HS5500 Direct Drive Media Player/Controlr:
This is a great deck. It's easy to use as long as you are willing to give it a little time. The main thing you need to consider is that it doesn't come with the internal hard drive OR the sled to add your own so you have to use usb drives. The sled has still not been made available as of 3-19-08. There is no noticable latency problems that I have seen with other decks. Scratching on it is as easy as scratching on good direct drive turntables. The cost may seem high, but considering that it is two decks in one, you can't beat it. So far I have only used this deck at home, but once the HDD sled is available it will be seeing some club time.
