For the price, the EV elx118p is a great sub. It produces bass that you can really feel. The crossover seems to be at about 100hz, so it's not so much of a "punchy bass" but more of a deep, thumping bass. It still has some good punch in the "flat mode," but then the some really starts to rumble the low-lows (around 30-50hz) when you switch the eq switch to low boost. I've used two of them at multiple events and have gotten nothing but positive reviews about their sound. At one high-school dance a kid came up to me and said "dude, your subs are [*]." The major flaw of this sub is that it doesn't have ample cooling for the amplifier. If you start pushing it at all, it WILL thermal and shut off. I went to [@] and bought a regular home air-circulating fan for each sub, placed it behind each subs and aimed it towards each amp, and they haven't thermalled yet. It seems that that extra airflow across the amp panel really helps them cool down. I had them limiting all night at a dance and they didn't overheat once; the fans really help. The bottom line- Good sound quality and high output for the price. Buy yourself a $15 dollar fan per sub and they'll do fine. Is a JBL PRX618-XLF or QSC KW181 better? Yes, but they are also much more expensive. You can almost buy 2 EV subs for the price of one JBL or QSC. Plus, I feel that the JBL & QSC, and other subs like them, are only a bit louder & cleaner than the EV's, which is why I still endorse the elx118p's.Also, these subs, like every sub, do much better when placed together. You get an extra 6db of output just by placing them right next to each other, ideal for dances. 6db doesn't sound like a lot, but it makes a big difference when you're talking about maxing out at 98db or 104db.

I looked around and heard all the powered subs jbl, qsc, mackie, cerwin vega. don't get me wrong the jbl prx 18" bumped so did the qsc Ksub 18". But the Ev was in my price range compared to the jbl prx and qsc Ksub 1200+ each also it has a good bass to it and light weight compared to the other subs.. I had the cerwin vega L36 subs but now in days who wants to carry those big a.. speakers around and plus the halls limit the volume or the organizer of the event so you cant even bump the speakers how you really want to it's not like you go a private event wedding ,sweet 15/16 etc..and crank the volume all the way up..
Would I recommend these to a friend yes if you're in a budget and looking for something not too over priced but will give you a good thump then go for the EV ..

The ONLY reason I am giving them 3 stars is because of their good looks and light weight. I hate to rag on them but they just do not have the sound that is expected when seeing the EV badge. They have a mushy sound that makes it feel like the subs are just struggling and trying way too hard. I was super disappointed because after hearing the ELX115p, you would assume the subwoofer in the same line would have similar characteristics. Not at all true other than looks. The ELX 118 just can't hang in the sound quality department in comparison to a KW18. Side by side test, the KW 18 BLEW the ELX away. No comparison. Its output is very disappointing as well. It is an improvement over no sub at all but I would definitely not buy this sub if you are expecting anything more than a little bit of bass fill.

We just received them in and put them to test last night, initially they sounded good but you could just tell that the base was not crisp and punchy put more wobbly. Then one sub started shutting of and then after a while the second one too and we were not even pushing the gains. I also had my PRX 718s next to them and there is simply no comparison in output, sound quality and reliability. These EV subs are a super disappointment and the price I guess justifies it. The JBL are twice as much but also are twice as better. We are returning the EV today.
