The Joe Strummer Signature Telecaster.

Now you can own a piece of the punk rock legend !

The Fender Joe Strummer Signature Telecaster is modeled after some of the beat up and battle-hardened Telecaster guitars (especially his famous '66 model) he wielded as leader of the only band that matters seminal Brit punk commando unit the Clash.

Designed in cooperation with the Strummer estate, the guitar has a highly distressed road-worn treatment that emulates the worn-to-the-wood layers of gray auto primer and flat black spray paint he made famous. It also features a Revolution Rock engraved neckplate and a limited edition art customization kit that includes Strummer-inspired stencils, stickers and graphics by designer Shepard Fairey.

Strummer was, of course, the Clash?s articulate and fiery co-founder, lyricist, rhythm guitarist and lead singer; he later founded, recorded and toured with the Mescaleros. All his life, he vigorously championed individuality, self-expression and change?tenets often reflected in the constantly altered look of his favorite instrument?his Telecaster (currently on display in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland), an otherwise standard ?60s-era model with all the original parts and specifications.

When Strummer bought the guitar in 1975, it had a 3-color Sunburst finish. He was having none of that, of course, but his improvised DIY gray and black finishes deteriorated quickly, giving the guitar its distinctive look. Like Strummer?s music, the battered guitar changed constantly?plastered as it was with stencils, stickers and new paint jobs through the many stages of Strummer?s life and career.

To celebrate Strummer?s fierce sense of individuality, Fender and acclaimed artist Shepard Fairey collaborated on the new guitar?s limited edition Joe Strummer Telecaster customization kit, which includes stencils and stickers inspired by the custom designs Strummer decorated many of his instruments with. The kit comes in a classic 12 inch album cover featuring graphics by Fairey and photography by Bob Gruen and will accompany ONLY the first 1,500 guitars !

Some Clash trivia

The Sex Pistols may have been the first British punk rock band, but the Clash were the definitive British punk rockers. Where the Pistols were nihilistic, the Clash were fiery and idealistic, charged with righteousness and a leftist political ideology. From the outset, the band was more musically adventurous, expanding its hard rock & roll with reggae dub and rockabilly among other roots musics. Furthermore, they were blessed with two exceptional songwriters in Joe Strummer and Mick Jones each with a distinctive voice and style. The Clash copped heavily from classic outlaw imagery, positioning themselves as rebels with a cause. As a result, they won a passionately devoted following on both sides of the Atlantic. While they became rock & roll heroes in the U.K., second only to the Jam in terms of popularity, it took the Clash several years to break into the American market, and when they finally did in 1982, they imploded several months later.

Comments about Fender Joe Strummer Telecaster Guitar:

I was at first skeptical of the whole relic idea and though I respect the Clash's music, they are not on any of my playlists. After playing this guitar, all doubts were wiped away. This guitar feels like my most trusted war axe. Anything from the Stones, to early Aerosmith, to Green Day, with a good modeling amp you can nail those (and more tones.) The bridge single coil is quite and meatty enough to take on a humbucker and at lower gains can do some smooth Strat sounds. Not as twangy as some other Teles but I don't think this would be the first choice for a chicken picker. This is an instrument that has rightly taken on a life of its own. Bravo Fender.

Comments about Fender Joe Strummer Telecaster Guitar:

This is really fun guitar to play,it get's a great tone clean in my fender 63 bassman great tone in my 77 marshall jmp. The secret I believe it is in the wood, the alder is a very nice piece of wood light and resonant. The electronics are nicely aged 6.2 neck 5.9 on the bridge. The pickups are oddly like a set of original 60's teles the lower output really makes the mids and wood tone come out. Great Tele snap on the bridge without the brittle treble the neck is full and sweet with enough power to come across. This is what a true vintage tele feels like and plays like. The neck is beautifuly done with a superb playing profile I love to play this guitar great for blues, jazz and of course rock very primative as teles are but the tone is sweet and complex,I really like this guitar now I can sell my 80's reissue tele's that sound and play like a board.
