JBL JRX118S: 18-Inch Passive Subwoofer

The JBL JRX118S is a non-powered subwoofer rated at 350 watts of continuous power handling at 4 ohms (1400 watts peak). This thumpin' sub is designed with a JBL 18" woofer with a cast frame and 3" voice-coil. It incorporates a sophisticated, advanced network topology design to ensure quality performance. To minimize distortion due to coil saturation, heavy gauge wire is used for inductors and SonicGuard high-frequency driver protection guards against damage caused by inadvertent overpowering of the system. It features 1/4" and speakon connectors. THe JRX118S is constructed of carpet-covered 3/4" MDF - a material that is structurally and acoustically superior to the particle board that is used by many competitive products. To ensure durability, JBL constructs these enclosures with advanced adhesives and closely mechanically spaced fasteners, while competitive systems typically rely on glue. Non-resonant, all metal handles are used and an 18 gauge, full metal grill protects the drivers. And of course, it's passed JBL's 100-hour full rated-power torture test.

Features:
  • 18 in. compact subwoofer.
  • 350 W (continuous), 1400 W (peak) power capacity.
  • The rugged enclosure is constructed from 19 mm (.75 in) MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) using advanced adhesives and mechanical fastener technology for durability and improved low-frequency performance. The enclosure is covered in black carpet.
  • A top mounted, cast aluminum 35 mm pole mount receptacle can receive an optional SS3BK pole to facilitate use of the JRX118SP as a base for a midhigh speaker cabinet.
  • Non-resonant, all steel handles are used.
  • Attractive 18-gauge perforated steel grille protects components from damage.
  • 35 mm pole mount receptacle for use with satellite speakers.
Specifications:
  • Power Rating: 350 W / 1400 W

I just purchased two JBL JRX 125's and two JBL JRX 118's. I also purchased a QSC GX5 amp and a Peavey IPR 3000 amp. The Peavey amp has a crossover but is pushing more wattage than I'm comfortable pushing on the JRX118's. Should I purchase a crossover for this setup or would it be good to just run the 118's on my peavey amp and the 125's on my QSC amp?
Nasty N8 on Mar 13, 2012
BEST ANSWER: You could definately run the JBL JRX 118's off of your Peavey amp. The amps power is within the reccommended power range.
I really like QSC Amps. Will the GX7 be too much power, or is the GX5 good enough to push a pair of thesse subs?
null on Oct 11, 2011
BEST ANSWER: The GX5 will give you enough overhead to push a pair of these.

Ok, i know these are 4 ohm subs. My question is if I run a cable from my QSC amp running mono mode to one of the subs and then run a jumper cable to the another sub then won't the load be reduced to 2 ohms? This should burn out my QSC which is not able to run a 2 ohm load..right? I am currently running this setup and things are working and nothing has burned out yet but the subs don't really sound strong. I guess that the THD bringing down the signal quality. So...why isn't the amp burning out if I am running a pair - 4 ohm subs off the amp??
LK on Jan 25, 2011
BEST ANSWER: You will have to view QSC's information on there website about the amps or contact there tech service department.

DJMikeT on Jan 12, 2011
BEST ANSWER: As per JBL's website: 38 Hz - 300 Hz (-10 dB)
i have a 600watt x2 power amp @ 4 ohms. I want to get the best subwoofer for the job. Is this the right sub for me? Or is there a better option. I figured that I could get one to start with to run in mono. Then later add a second one, if that would be wise. Am i making the right decision getting this speaker?
DJ Quantum Interference on Aug 11, 2010
BEST ANSWER: It really depends on what kind of setup and specifically which amp you have. Please call us directly so one of the product advisors can help you out.
i have a peavy xr8600 amp/mixer. I want to use it to push as much speaker as possible. It has 1200 watts @4 ohms availible (600w x2). I plan in using the amp to push subs only. Is this the right sub for me. Can i switch my amp to 8 ohm? should I? This is my first passive speaker purchase, and i want to get the best speaker i can. (My full-range speakers are 2 American Audio PXI-15's.) I have my eye on this sub (maybe i could add a second one later?). I already have the amp (i traded it from a friend). Thanks

How does the sound quality and frequency response in these bass cabinets compare with the higher end single 18" JBL Subs?
djcscoop on May 27, 2010
BEST ANSWER: The higher-end models offer increased wattage and frequence response. With proper amplification (1.5 times wattage of speakers continuous rating).

Dj Big Will on May 18, 2010

Great Passive Sub
Pros: Clear sound,Great Sound,Attractive Design,Durable,Easy To Set Up

This sub has some really amazing sound, especially when combined with the JBL JRX118SP Powered Sub. The pair of JBL subs are easy to set up- even for someone who isn't particularly tech savy.
