The JBL JRX118SP powered subwoofer incorporates a specially designed amplifier with 500 watts peak and 300 watts continuous power output into the same driver as the non-powered version. It offers a built-in stereo crossover network and peak limiter to protect the amplifier and speaker from clipping. The JRX118SP is designed with a JBL 18" woofer with a cast frame and 3" voice-coil. It incorporates a sophisticated, advanced network topology design to ensure quality performance. To minimize distortion due to coil saturation, heavy gauge wire is used for inductors and SonicGuard high-frequency driver protection guards against damage caused by inadvertent overpowering of the system. It features 1/4" and speakon connectors. THe JRX118S is constructed of carpet-covered 3/4" MDF - a material that is structurally and acoustically superior to the particle board that is used by many competitive products. To ensure durability, JBL constructs these enclosures with advanced adhesives and closely mechanically spaced fasteners, while competitive systems typically rely on glue. Non-resonant, all metal handles are used and an 18 gauge, full metal grill protects the drivers. And of course, it's passed JBL's 100-hour full rated-power torture test.

A:
Please contact the manufacturer, for this product is not
supposed to have a burning smell.Answered on 1/29/2010 by Stephen from PSSL from Cypress, CAA:
Yes, we had a couple of Powered JBLs. Sounds great, but both eventually died. The amplifiers in each fried itself after about 500 hours. It took us hours to find a phone number and service location for JBL. They will replace if under warranty. Keep the power level way below the rated power and it will survive, otherwise you will need a bank loan :)Answered on 2/3/2011 by Jeffrey from Novi, Michigan
