Wow! After reading a review of this hidden treasure in a recent Tape Op magazine, I hunted it down and figured it would be worth the [$] price tag. Well, it is worth the cost--but it's actually worth many times more. The SP-1 has become my new go-to mic for almost any application: vocals, electric guitar, acoustic, ukulele, percussion, bass, etc. I have about 6 or 7 mics, many of which I like a lot (including a ribbon and the MXL V67). I thought the SP-1 would be an average mic to break out every now and then, but I am completely blown away by the sound and its versatility. Most Chinese mics have a harsh top end which doesn't flatter my voice, but the SP-1 is somehow very smooth without having a dark, murky sound like some ribbons I've tried. I find I'm actually singing better, and every track sits very nicely in the mix. It is equally excellent mic'ing amps, reproducing low end, or capturing the tone of my Larrivee acoustic or ukulele (although it does help if you angle the mic off-axis to emphasize the treble a bit more).I can say this with all honestly--and I wouldn't say this about any other mic in my collection, even the ones that cost much more--I would be extremely happy if I paid $300 for this mic with the way it has performed so far. Kudos to Pro Sound for carrying this mic as it's getting harder to find. There's absolutely no excuse in the world not to pick up one or two of these diamonds on the rough right away!

I just wanted to point out to "DaBestRapperAlive" 3 spots below me. That the mic not working with Sony Acid is not the mics fault. As a matter of fact, it has nothing to do with the mic or the DAW. The mic has to be plugged into an interface that has phantom power for it to work. As do all mics of this type. So before you bash something, please understand how it works before you give it a bad review.

i took a blind risk on this mic back in 2006, based on the rave review if got in an issue of TapeOp. since then, i used the pair that i ordered in many applications, my favorites being drum overheads and pseudo-stereo for vibes. without question, these mics are worth the price, particularly if you take advantage of pair discount. just got one in the mail (again) to replace one that got stolen-- yes, these mics are good enough to be stolen.

Having gone from radio station management with high-priced gear to working with cash-strapped nonprofit orgs, I am pleased to find this mic that I use with the "Blue Icicle" USB interface (also purchased here). Do a search about it and you find that some enthusiasts even pay hundreds of dollars to have this mic tweaked to perform very close to $2,000 models. Buy a couple, you won't regret It!

Four stars because I think this really is a good microphone. I did not, however, end up using it during my recording session that I had planned recently. I heard so much good about this microphone, but I couldn't use it due to radio station interference.. I can't blame the microphone for this, however, it just seems like my location is bad because I live right by some radio towers and I'm pretty sure I'm picking up a very strong signal. I'll amend this review once I figure out a solution for this problem.

I can't give the microphone five stars until I fully experience it, which I have yet to do.

Comments about MXL Marshall Microphones MXL MCA SP-1 Studio Condenser Microphone With Clip:

I'm using lots of standard mics like sennheiser 421, SM7/57/58, AKG 460, KM84, KM83, SE 5000, Fatheads, Beyer M160, EV 408/308/ RE 55, TS-1/2 etc. So I should know enough to mean what I say when I say this is a great mic. The cardiod pattern is very tight. Very smooth mid range. So far it's great on acoustic guitars, vocals and amps.

Some say the mount is flimsy, but I have had no problems.

I bought the SP1 microphone for my home studio as a quick fix to poor microphone quality. For it's low price i was surprised to find how heavy it actually is and i like it. The sound is clean and caused no problems so far. Paired with the "Micro-Power PS400", this mic matches the quality of any high priced microphone any day.

I bought a pair on recommendation from TapeOp reviews and was I suprized! I ordered two more and another dozen for two friends who are ultra gear snobs. We ab'd them with several high end Neumanns and Akg mics, and they more than held their own. These mics are also very easy to upgrade the electronic components in, which makes them even more incredible at their price. AAA+

Does this mic come with a cable? If not I'm obviously assuming you have to buy a mic cable on your own to plug it into your audio interface, correct?

To get this to work, just make sure you run the phantom power, have the MCA SP1 going into the XLR/1/4 input, and have the sensitivity at 12 o'clock.

So I just got this Condenser Mic and wanted to use it with my Roland VS-880. I got a Behringer Micopower PS400 for Phantom Power. I'm getting this annoying hum I can't explain. I unplugged it and plugged in a Shure 58 to check and see if it was the phantom power...but no hum with the Shure. Is it the Condenser? I'm using a headphone style adapter to plug into the Roland. Only other thing I can think of is the electrical in the building.

It could be the electrical in the build like you mentioned. But since you tested it with a 58 which doesn't require phantom power you cannot rule out the PS400 just yet. What I suggest is unplug all you gear and plug each one back at a time to see at which point in your signal flow you actually do get the hum at. It really could be a bad audio cable too. try keeping all of your audio cables away from electrical cables as the electromagnetic inference may cause the hum as well. Let me know if you still have the problem 714-891-5914 ext 8132

i used to own a VS-890 and the gain structure on that machine would cause unwanted noise. make sure that the trim is selected for line-level, since you are using an external phantom power supply. also, since the shure sm58 doesn't require phantom power, it shouldn't be your reference for verifying that the Behringer isn't supplying the hum.
if the trim/ gain balance doesn't reduce the hum, i'd double-check the behringer micropower, as i have had more quality-control issues with their stuff than i have had with my old roland VS-890 or the MCA mics i've had. i used a Presonus tube preamp (the really cheap one) with this set up and had little noise, mostly ambient noise.

The Mxl MCA SP-1 is a large diaphroagm condenser mic, you will need Phantom Power.
The Lexican Alpha does not have Phantom Power. You will need the Lexicon Omega.

The Lexicon will work fine with that mic. The sound of mic pre's is very subjective to the user so it is best to have a good understanding of your application and recording needs. If you have any further questions feel free to give us a call!

No, this will not plug directly into your computer. You will first need a Phantom Power Supply if you don't have a mixer). You also might want to invest in a 1/4" adapter (to convert the big plug into one that fits your mic jack). So basically you can spend $100 and be ready to record in no time :)

You will need a USB interface such as the Blue Icicle. That is what I use with mine. It will NOT plug into your PC directly.
