Wow! After reading a review of this hidden treasure in a recent Tape Op magazine, I hunted it down and figured it would be worth the [$] price tag. Well, it is worth the cost--but it's actually worth many times more. The SP-1 has become my new go-to mic for almost any application: vocals, electric guitar, acoustic, ukulele, percussion, bass, etc. I have about 6 or 7 mics, many of which I like a lot (including a ribbon and the MXL V67). I thought the SP-1 would be an average mic to break out every now and then, but I am completely blown away by the sound and its versatility. Most Chinese mics have a harsh top end which doesn't flatter my voice, but the SP-1 is somehow very smooth without having a dark, murky sound like some ribbons I've tried. I find I'm actually singing better, and every track sits very nicely in the mix. It is equally excellent mic'ing amps, reproducing low end, or capturing the tone of my Larrivee acoustic or ukulele (although it does help if you angle the mic off-axis to emphasize the treble a bit more).I can say this with all honestly--and I wouldn't say this about any other mic in my collection, even the ones that cost much more--I would be extremely happy if I paid $300 for this mic with the way it has performed so far. Kudos to Pro Sound for carrying this mic as it's getting harder to find. There's absolutely no excuse in the world not to pick up one or two of these diamonds on the rough right away!

I just wanted to point out to "DaBestRapperAlive" 3 spots below me. That the mic not working with Sony Acid is not the mics fault. As a matter of fact, it has nothing to do with the mic or the DAW. The mic has to be plugged into an interface that has phantom power for it to work. As do all mics of this type. So before you bash something, please understand how it works before you give it a bad review.

Gift for my son. He has his own commercial sound studio in NYC. He started raving about the mics right away. He is "modding" them with high end parts and very happy with the results.

i took a blind risk on this mic back in 2006, based on the rave review if got in an issue of TapeOp. since then, i used the pair that i ordered in many applications, my favorites being drum overheads and pseudo-stereo for vibes. without question, these mics are worth the price, particularly if you take advantage of pair discount. just got one in the mail (again) to replace one that got stolen-- yes, these mics are good enough to be stolen.

I own a small theatrical lighting and audion production company. I use these mics a lot for choirs and recording purposes. I have had 6 for 10 years with no problems yet. I have had to purchase more because they are in such high demand.

Having gone from radio station management with high-priced gear to working with cash-strapped nonprofit orgs, I am pleased to find this mic that I use with the "Blue Icicle" USB interface (also purchased here). Do a search about it and you find that some enthusiasts even pay hundreds of dollars to have this mic tweaked to perform very close to $2,000 models. Buy a couple, you won't regret It!

Four stars because I think this really is a good microphone. I did not, however, end up using it during my recording session that I had planned recently. I heard so much good about this microphone, but I couldn't use it due to radio station interference.. I can't blame the microphone for this, however, it just seems like my location is bad because I live right by some radio towers and I'm pretty sure I'm picking up a very strong signal. I'll amend this review once I figure out a solution for this problem.
I can't give the microphone five stars until I fully experience it, which I have yet to do.

I have used this microphone for recording live performances, and in my home recording studio. I find it every bit as accurate and noise-free (shock mounted, of course) as similar microphones costing hundreds of dollars.

I'm using lots of standard mics like sennheiser 421, SM7/57/58, AKG 460, KM84, KM83, SE 5000, Fatheads, Beyer M160, EV 408/308/ RE 55, TS-1/2 etc. So I should know enough to mean what I say when I say this is a great mic. The cardiod pattern is very tight. Very smooth mid range. So far it's great on acoustic guitars, vocals and amps.
Some say the mount is flimsy, but I have had no problems.

Q:
What kind of cord EXACTLY do I need to hook this up to my laptop. Since I saw in another question this does not come with any cords to hook it up to a CPU..1 answer
A:
You would need an USB Audio Interface with a mic input and XLR cable.Q:
What all do i need to hook this up to a computer?1 answer
A:
Hello, without a USB option for this microphone you would need an USB Audio Interface with a mic input in order to connect it to your laptop or computer. Thank You.Q:
What Type of cables does this mic need1 answer
A:
This microphone uses a standard mic cable. XLR output. For the money this mic sounds awesome... I use one in my studio. If you have any further questions please feel free to give us a call at 800-945-9300. Thanks.Q:
Does this mic come with a cable? If not I'm obviously assuming you have to buy a mic cable on your own to plug it into your audio interface, correct?1 answer
A:
No cable. You will have to purchase it.Q:
Can someone please help me? I have an MCA SP1 and an Edirol UA-5 USB audio interface. I need to know how to make it work with the interface. PLease help me! it has 48v phantom and everything, but the audio won't come thru.1 answer
A:
To get this to work, just make sure you run the phantom power, have the MCA SP1 going into the XLR/1/4 input, and have the sensitivity at 12 o'clock.Q:
So I just got this Condenser Mic and wanted to use it with my Roland VS-880. I got a Behringer Micopower PS400 for Phantom Power. I'm getting this annoying hum I can't explain. I unplugged it and plugged in a Shure 58 to check and see if it was the phantom power...but no hum with the Shure. Is it the Condenser? I'm using a headphone style adapter to plug into the Roland. Only other thing I can think of is the electrical in the building.2 answers
A:
i used to own a VS-890 and the gain structure on that machine would cause unwanted noise. make sure that the trim is selected for line-level, since you are using an external phantom power supply. also, since the shure sm58 doesn't require phantom power, it shouldn't be your reference for verifying that the Behringer isn't supplying the hum.A:
It could be the electrical in the build like you mentioned. But since you tested it with a 58 which doesn't require phantom power you cannot rule out the PS400 just yet. What I suggest is unplug all you gear and plug each one back at a time to see at which point in your signal flow you actually do get the hum at. It really could be a bad audio cable too. try keeping all of your audio cables away from electrical cables as the electromagnetic inference may cause the hum as well. Let me know if you still have the problem 714-891-5914 ext 8132Q:
Will this mic work with the Lexicon Alpha Desktop USB Audio Interface?1 answer
A:
The Mxl MCA SP-1 is a large diaphroagm condenser mic, you will need Phantom Power.Q:
I have this mic and i am thinking about purchasing the Lexicon LAMBDA Desktop USB Audio Interface (Item # 55042)1 answer
A:
The Lexicon will work fine with that mic. The sound of mic pre's is very subjective to the user so it is best to have a good understanding of your application and recording needs. If you have any further questions feel free to give us a call!Q:
I want to plug this microphone into my Windows Vista PC, I simply have a regular sound card, nothing fancy. Can this microphone plug into my computer just via USB or through my sound card or do I need to upgrade my current hardware in order to use this product?3 answers
A:
this will sound a lot better with a nice sound card but yes it willl work with the stock soud cardA:
You will need a USB interface such as the Blue Icicle. That is what I use with mine. It will NOT plug into your PC directly.A:
No, this will not plug directly into your computer. You will first need a Phantom Power Supply if you don't have a mixer). You also might want to invest in a 1/4" adapter (to convert the big plug into one that fits your mic jack). So basically you can spend $100 and be ready to record in no time :)Q:
what all does this mic come with1 answer
A:
The Microphone, clip, and a microphone bag to protect it.
