  • Q:

I was a bass player in the 60s and am familiar with mixing consoles, but I am not familiar with DAWs like Pro Tools or Cubase. If I have a 1640i mixer, do I need a DAW? If I have a DAW, do I need a 1640i mixer. What is the relationship between a DAW and the 1640i?

      A:

You technically don't need the mixer if you have a DAW, as pretty much all of the mixer functions are available within the DAW itself. However, you'll need to use more plugins within the DAW to get the same end results if you don't have the physical mixer (an EQ plugin, a reverb plugin, etc.). If you use too many plugins at once, your computer may not be able to handle it and you could get lag or even have the program crash on you.
