Mighty Movers: Intimidator Spot LED Series

Every year, I try and purchase at least two or three new lighting fixtures to keep my setup up-to-date, offer clients an extensive variety when it comes to lighting packages and create a stellar light show for my band. My setup consists of linear and PAR can-style wash lights, color-mixing lasers and eye-catching effect lights. However, it is missing a key component -moving heads. Every mobile performer dreams of integrating these fixtures into their setup, and now, with the advancement of LEDs, it is much more affordable to do so. The Chauvet DJ Intimidator Spot series consists of three powerful moving heads that are welcome to join my personal collection: Intimidator Spot LED 150, Intimidator Spot LED 250 and Intimidator Spot LED 350. I had a few weeks to put these fixtures through the ringer and test them out in live applications. All three fixtures have exceptionally fast movement, project insanely bright beams and create the desired eye-candy gigs scream for. Needless to say, each one exceeded my expectations.

Starting off Small

I started with the smallest of the bunch: Intimidator Spot LED 150. I think of moving heads as heavy and bulky fixtures, but this light is so compact (8.1x8.3x11.5 inches) and lightweight (9.3 pounds) that I was in disbelief when I pulled it out of the box. Intimidator Spot LED 150 is powered by a 25-watt LED and includes nine gobos and nine colors (plus white) on separate wheels to create light shows that allow you to cater to any and every type of gig. The fixture seems to fit just about anywhere, so I mounted it to my truss, opted for 11-channel DMX mode and went to town. I'm not a control freak, but it felt good to have complete power over the fixture's features. It projected colorful swirls, waves, dots and stars that bounced around the room and livened up the space. For as petite as it is, I was impressed with the power, brightness and effects emitted by this little mover.

On to the Big Boys

My inner lighting geek emerged when it came time to test Intimidator Spot LED 250 and Intimidator Spot LED 350. Both fixtures include a three-facet prism - one my favorite features because it multiplies the beam and covers a much larger area - as well as seven gobos and eight colors (plus white) on separate wheels. What really knocked my socks off - the easy-access gobo door and electronic dimmer. This means if I'm DJing a wedding and receive a last minute request from the bride, I can easily swap out custom gobos without having to open the fixture and can make them as bright or subtle as I want. I mounted both fixtures to my truss, opted for 14-channel DMX mode and began programming. For kicks, I added a few wash and effect lights to the truss and designed light shows unlike anything I've ever designed before. Colorful, multi-facet gobos created movement around the room and ran in synch with the wash and effect lights for a cohesive look - at last my light show is complete. The difference between these two moving heads lies within the size, weight, LED and features. For as powerful as it is, Intimidator Spot LED 250 is still a compact (9.3x8.1x11.3 inches) and lightweight (12 pounds) moving head that packs a powerful punch with its 45-watt LED. Intimidatorâ„¢ Spot LED 350 is a rugged, road-ready fixture that is the king of the series. Weighing 22.7 pounds and measuring 10.6x13.4x15.4 inches, this fixture is powered by a 75 watt LED and includes a motorized focus for (so you have) crystal clear gobo projection and a manual zoom for long-throw applications.

All in the Family

I mounted the three moving heads next to each other - Edison power-linking made this much easier - to review and compare their commonalities. The front of the base features an LED digital display and cooling fan, while the back houses the power and DMX connections and fuse holder. For mounting and added safety, bracket attachments and safety loops are located on the bottom. All three fixtures have super crisp optics and project an even output, so much so, I couldn't identify a hotspot. I was able to minimize programming time by using the move-in-black feature and built-in effect macros, but there are built-in programs that automatically project hypnotizing shows. All in all, they are super bright lights that move really fast and I want all of them.
