Novation Dicer Scratch Live Hardware Controller

Serato Scratch Live has a new partner: The Novation Dicer.

Developed with Serato, this palm-sized cue point and looping controller has been designed to fit exactly where you need it: on your turntables, CDJs, mixer or laptop. Dicer always ships in pairs - one for each side.

Plug Dicer in, slot it on your turntable/CDJ, and you can instantly set cue points and use them to trigger 'Hot Cues'. Or, flip Dicer into 'Auto-Loop' or 'Loop Roll' modes, to trigger loops, or 'roll' sections of the track to create climaxes, drops and glitchy breaks. Each 'mode' illuminates Dicer's pads a different colour, so you can instantly see what mode the pads in, even in dark clubs and venues.

The forthcoming Scratch Live 2.1 update will automatically map the Dicer to these functions and provide full LED feedback - red for Hot Cues, green for Loop Roll, and amber for Auto-Loop. Dicer can control all cue-point and looping functions in the current version of Serato Scratch Live 2.0. This requires you to simply 'learn' cue-point and looping to Dicer's pads, using Scratch Live's MIDI-learn function. The public beta of Scratch Live 2.1 is available now.

Dicer's buttons can also 'learn' other software functions. So, you can assign different FX to the pads, or trigger samples over the top of your mix, or even browse tracks in your iTunes library!

Dicer was designed by Novation in collaboration with Ean Golden - DJ and curator of DJ Tech Tools. Ean came up with the concept of a controller that fits on the turntable, and his contribution has been crucial in helping Novation design and develop Dicer.

Features:

Performance buttons with visual feedback

Backlit, multi-colour, soft touch ‘dice’ buttons, provide immediate LED feedback from Serato Scratch Live software.

Locks straight onto Technics SL 1200/10, and similar decks

Using the 45-adapter hole, Dicer places looping control right where you need it - on your decks, millimetres away from your vinyl.

Attaches to CDJs, mixers and laptops.

With Novation’s reusable ‘DJ putty’, your Dicers can slot into even the most cramped of DJ performance set-ups, sticking cleanly and directly onto your CDJs, mixer or laptop.

Default set-up for Serato Scratch Live

Dicer is pre-programmed to take advantage of the cue point and looping functions in Serato Scratch Live, including ‘Hot Cues’, ‘Auto Roll’ and ‘Loop Roll’.

Works with all major DJ software

Dicer is fully MIDI assignable, so it can be set up to control almost any software, including Tractor Scratch Pro. Up to 60 assignable MIDI controls are available from a pair of Dicers.

VERY FAST response. Puts any button control you want at your finger tips. If you are a turntablist you will love this. Just like the old method of tape cuing on a real record you can set cue point and jump to them in an instant. The Dicer will work with programs other then Serato. I use it with Virtual DJ Pro as well. It is natively supported by Virtual DJ so no mapping is required.

Having MIDI control so close to the platter is priceless. Switching tracks, stutter effects, and any other punch in controls are instantly accessible, making complex operations easy. It opens up many creative opportunities! Too bad it doesn't have just one knob, but you can't have everything.

Comments about Novation Dicer Serato Hardware Controller - Pair:

Looking into the Dicer at first glance, you don't know what to make of it. Looks kinda funny, and I've had plenty of bad luck with other midi devices in the past. But I gave it a try, I needed something that would do cues, and loops on the fly without having to hot cue on the laptop. As long as you have Serato 2.1 installed, its ready out of the box. First time I used it was right at show time, set up warmed up for a few minutes, and it was time to work. It didn't even take 5 mins to get used to how it worked. The roll feature (green lights) is amazing, and having the ability to loop without having to use the mouse pad, and change from 16 to 8,4,2,1 was just amazing, right on the beat is very easy to use! Highly recommend, best midi for the best price!

Ok, if you've seen the guy who came up with these then you know he Dj's without turntables and cd players, he's mastered the button Dj to a science. With that said these are very responsive with serato, it gives you the option to use the presets or customize the 3 memory banks and will save you from wearing out the buttons on your computer. I switched from the Korg Nano Pad because they only last me about 3 months then the buttons stop working. This will "up" your game as a dj.

Comments about Novation Dicer Serato Hardware Controller - Pair:

First the only con: I use this with my cdj1000 setup and the ONLY bad part about them is that they cover up the master tempo button.

Now the Pros: GREAT little midi controllers. They work absolutely seamlessly with my sl3 setup. Just plug them in to a free usb port, fire up my serato, and im ready to jam. Looping, cueing, and rolling are spot on and react to the slightest button pressing. The video of the junglist using them and how fast his finger hits the button and the controller responds is EXACTLY true. Now I can FINALLY use a roll effect with the echo effect of my djm800 at the same time on the same chan. Love it!

Oh, and the con is a moot point when the dicers are used in conjunction with sl3 on cdjs, as you cant use deck effects with serato anyway.
