Comments about PRS Paul Reed Smith PRS SE Custom Flat Top Double Ctw Electric Guitar:
Beauty, of course, is in the eye of the beholder but the various finishes and options available with the PRS SE Custom make it essentially beautiful for virtually all of us. From a country borne Tobacco Sunburst to a classically gothic Gray Black to the simply classic Cherry Sunburst, the SE Custom immediately grabs our attention. And in this case, beauty is hardly only skin deep. Of course we have to start with that stunning skin – a maple top with a flame maple veneer. All of this skin sits on top of a wonderfully rich mahogany body moving outward along a rosewood fretboard with moon inlays to that well known PRS head beautifully finished to match the body color.
We can’t help but pick it up as soon as we have the chance and immediately feel something as lovely as what our eyes had seen. The SE Custom is ‘just right’ – a nice all-night-long weight, that very comfortable 25 inch scale length, and 22 frets stretched out over that fast and playable wide & fat neck. Of course we plug it in – any amp will do to start – we just have to hear it. We’ll start with the stop tail and leave the tremolo version for later when we will dive bomb until our heart’s content (the SE Custom is available either way). One tone control, one volume knob and a three way toggle only hint at the awesomely wide range of tones this guitar is capable of producing through those two PRS designed humbuckers.
Playing this guitar is what it’s all about. Strumming that first chord and just letting the sound sssslllooowwwlllyyy decay is captivating. The amount of sustain is great – the tonality better – and the flexibility better still. With the tone pumped and only the bridge pickup selected, you get the kind of sound you hope for but more of it then you expect. Thinking maybe that is the bias of this axe, you back off the tone and play only the neck pickup. Once again, the character of the guitar changes completely. It has a remarkable palette of sonic splendors right at your fingertips.
Ah, but I’ve saved the best for last. With all of this PRS magic, the SE Custom has a remarkably reasonable price – and a gig bag to boot! This is a simply terrific guitar for anyone at any level. Try one – you’ll love it!
