QSC KW181 18-Inch 1000W Powered Subwoofer

Bring the BOOM with QSC's most popular subwoofer (for good reason), the KW181. This earth-shaking beast consists of an 18" subwoofer within a premium birch cabinet, low-noise casters, a 1000 watt Class D power amplifier, and built-in DSP, featuring a threaded pole receptable for wobble-free stability.

The KW Series pushes the widly successful K series a step further into the world of wood enclosures. The system engineers (or possibly magicians) over at QSC have somehow managed to port over the game-changing electronic attributes of the K series while also designing a product that is both smaller and significantly lighter than the wood enclosure speakers that came before it.

Smaller than most other 18" subwoofers and yet somehow still making them pale in comparison, the KW181's snarling bass output guarantees you get the best possible sound whether you're mobile or installing it. The built-in crossover, limiter, and additional rack components have been engineered in dummy-proof fashion to ensure that you have the best possible sound right out of the box.

Defined Coverage Area:

Directivity Matched Transition (DMT™) provides for matched LF and HF coverage across the entire listening area, eliminating unnatural "dead" or "hot" frequency zones.

DSP: Finely tuned digital signal processing elevate the sonic clarity and total output of the KW181 to ridiculous new heights:
  • Intrinsic Correction™, first featured in our high-end line array products maps 65-75 spatially-averaged measurements to IIR and FIR filters that actively adjust time, frequency and amplitude response to a maximally flat bandpass target. The result is a speaker that behaves equally well across the entire sound field.
  • DEEP™ and excursion limiting allow for extended low-frequency response by actively managing low-frequency transients without degradation of the underlying signal or adjacent frequencies.
  • GuardRail™ protection, first introduced on our GX Series amplifiers protects both the amplifier module and your performance from unnatural and destructive clipping.

Make your bass really growl with the LF switch can be set to NORM or DEEP™ for additional bass extension, . The rear panel LED switch can be set to POWER, illuminating the front-mounted LED when the unit is powered on, OFF for applications where it is not desirable to illuminate the front LED, or LIMIT which indicates to the system operator that the clip limiter circuit has been engaged during operation.

  • K Series performance in a lightweight, birch design
  • 1000 watt Class D power modules in all models (2 x 500 W)
  • Extensive DSP featuring DEEP™ and Intrinsic Correction™ enhances system performance
  • DMT™ (Directivity Matched Transition) ensures uniform coverage across the entire sound field
  • Rugged, texture-painted birch enclosures
  • Tour-grade 16 gauge steel grilles
  • Comfortable ergonomic handles

On the QSC KW 181 18" Powered PA Subwoofer is the line in A and B the same as a right and left channel? Like do I come out of my mixer with left and right RCA cables and plug in to the Sub or do I just need one cable? If so, which side? The red RCA or the white RCA? Is the Sub stereo or mono?
DJ Kevin
DJ Kevin on Aug 29, 2014
BEST ANSWER: No, Line A and Line B are for two different sources of audio. If you were coming out of a mixer and running into the sub, you would just need an XLR or 1/4" connector going into one of the inputs.

Any single speaker is technically mono because by definition, stereo requires two speakers.
The sound on these subs seem to be loved by everyone, but the casters on the back of the unit, do they rattle when the bass hits and if so can they be removed.
bill on Jun 25, 2011
BEST ANSWER: This a great subwoofer with a lot power and great low ends. The casters on the back of the unit are solidly secured, but can also be removed using a screw driver. The Sub Woofer does get really loud, but the casters are high quality so they should not rattle or move.
what is the " continuous " watts on this speaker?
Zeke on Mar 26, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Hey Zeke! The KW181 Subwoofer is rated for 1000 W continuous. Unless otherwise stated, QSC speakers are tested and rated for continuous or RMS output. This has to do with QSC's rigorous testing and Quality Control standards.

hv nvr heard these subs.make a comparison.im a peavey fan.
old schl on Feb 20, 2011
BEST ANSWER: For this particular model of QSC subwoofers, they are housed in a wood box. This would differentiate between any other subwoofer that would be housed in a composite plastic like most subwoofers are. When subwoofers or speakers are housed in wood cabinets, it helps reduce any excess resonance that accumilates in a composite cabinet. In short, a wood cabinet will offer an overall cleaner and deeper sound.
Can I run 2 qsc k12 using only 1 of this sub? If yes, How can I do so? Thanks
John snow on Aug 18, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you absolutely can! Run from the stereo outputs of your source (DJ controller, PA mixer, etc.) and connect into both inputs of the QSC KW181 18in Powered PA Subwoofer using either 1/4" or XLR connectors. From there, run from the XLR outputs on the subwoofer to each of your K12s.
How does this sub compare to the Cerwin Vega 18" which is better?
DJ TECNIQ on Dec 9, 2014
BEST ANSWER: That depends entirely on which Cerwin Vega you're referring to, as a folded horn sub and front-firing sub are going to sound very different. In regards to "better," it's all a matter of preference.
How much does it weigh?
Krazykarll on Oct 22, 2014
BEST ANSWER: The KW181 weights 88 lbs.
hi there. do I need a crossover for this subwoofer? QSC KW181
DJ Meza on Jul 28, 2014
BEST ANSWER: DJ Meza, here's an answer for ya from a QSC rep:

"There is really no need to use an external crossover -- this is a VERY well designed DSP crossover with all the correct settings already built into each KW (and K) series loudspeaker. Just feed them full range audio, and daisy-chain that audio to ALL the KW speakers! Some folks do indeed use a separate outboard external crossover, primarily for the overall "house EQ" capability that some provide, as well as some delay options when using multiple speaker stacks spread out over a large listening area. Delay allows for some acoustic time alignment. Some users swear by "sonic maximizer" or "optimizer" type of outboard processing, but that is purely subjective -- if it sounds better to you, then there is no harm in using them. But we recommend you bypass the crossover features of the external unit if possible."
I have the Ksub which rolls back and sits right in the trunk of my altima coupe perfectly. I needed something small and mobile which is why I got it I like it but I've heard the KW181 and couldn't believe how much harder it hits. I'm curious what is the dimensions and size of this sub compared to the Ksub and if possible would this fit in the trunk of my car or is the ksub much smaller? If it fits I'm looking to trade my Ksub. Thank you for any help.

Great sub, size and sound!!!
Pros: Good Power Output,Easy To Set Up,Great Sound Quality,Attractive Design,Easy to Mount

Great sub. I have 2k12's paired with 2 kw181's. These subs have done me well. I usually take 1 kw181 to smaller parties say 100-150, then both for larger crowds. Thus far after owning them for the past 6mos, I have yet to turn these up past 12 (unity). I have never seen them clip either. The casters on these are great, I load my k12's on top with mixing console and wheel into events. Invest in the covers, great for your power and xlr cords. No complaints..great size, great bass and looks good.

The Goliath of subs. Professional grade.
Pros: Attractive Design,Easy To Set Up,Great Sound Quality,Good Power Output

I love this sub and so many of my customers are so impressed with the crisp bass coming from the speaker. The great thing is; It actually hides right under my 4ft table. I did my research for a long time and have no regrets. I use it with 2 K12's and looking at another KW181. Great investment! Oh yeah...no amp needed since its already built in.

The police showed up. I only\ had them half way up . I do have QSC k 12 and QSC k10 . They sound awesome. You could dj a dance with over 1000 people easy.
