Comments about Shure 55SH-2 Vintage Classic Microphone:
I run sound and have been a professional musician for over 40 years and cringe every time I see one of these get unpacked for a live show.
First: Shure may use modern elements in it, but the diaphragm is almost an inch away from the front cage of the mic, which reduces the volume dramatically compared to an SM58.
Second: The cage itself blocks a lot of the vocalist voice with its rather beefy housing, which reduces the volume even more.
Third: The cage acts as a mid range resonator which adds to feedback problems and a mid range honk. Imagine singing into a can with holes in it.
The best thing you can do with this mic is hide it from the vocalist, leave it at home or just use it as a video prop. I had one for a while in my studio and returned it almost immediately and in live performances, you spend most of your time dealing with feedback issues.
If you buy this mic, you're doing it totally for the look, but you'll be sacrificing 30% of the sound you can get with almost any other dynamic mic for half the price.
