This is a swiss army mic found in everyone's cabinet. They are extremely rugged and versatile. Great on amps and snare, but can also be used on acoustic instruments and pianos in a pinch. Everyone should have at least two of these in their mic locker.

Comments about Shure SM57LC Cardioid Instrument Microphone:
I have several of these little wonders, and am very pleased with them. I've used them for a variety of sources, including woodwinds, brass, drums, percussion, guitar cabs, etc. I've used them in a variety of settings, including live bands, stage, orchestra, and recording. Now, they're not as good as a solid condenser mic in terms of a flat sound or sensitivity. So they're not your best choice for recording. But in a live performance setting, where you need a rugged mic with good (not perfect) sound that can deal with the unpredictable on-stage volumes you can run into, this is a very handy performer indeed.
