Shure is not kidding when they call these "Reference Headphonnes"
The SRH940 may possibly be the best closed-back studio headphone available today.

I own Shure SRH 940s, SRH1540s, Sennheiser HD650s, HD 350s, Sony MDR7609s (not 7609HDs).

The HD650s are the most accurate and have extremely low distortion. However, they are useless for on-location recording since they are open-back and provide virtually no ambient sound isolation. Of the closed-back phones it's essentially a "toss-up" between the Shure SRH-940s and the 1540s. The sound is very similar, i.e; Very low distortion, extended, flat, non-boomy bass and a slight peak between 8 and 9 KHz. The differences between the 940s and 1540s is much more "mechanical" rather than acoustic.

The 940s use mostly plastic in their construction, the pivot "gimbals" are all-plastic and the 940 headband uses one wide band section. The 940 also uses a single-entry cable connecting through the left cup only.

The 1540 uses metal gimbals, less plastic and uses a double-hoop headband. The 1540 weighs about 1.5 oZ less the the 940 and has essentially the same sound. Both are extremely comfortable.

As delivered, by first pair of 940s produced some audible mechanical noise (squeaks and clicks) as the gimbals and headband pivots moved. A few drops of thick silicone oil in the pivots corrected the noise.

I find the 1840's slightly more comfortable, but don't really care for the separate cable connections to each side. I prefer the single, left can connection of the 940s. The 1.5 oz weight difference is not really an issue for me.

Overall I believe the 940s are a much better buy: Essentially identical sound at 60% of the cost of the 1540s. Either is a great choice for on-location or studio recording, and either is acceptable for mixing, although the HD650s are even better.
