Comments about Taylor Guitars Taylor T5C Cst Spruce Semi-Hollow Body Elec Guitar:
I own the T5 Custom Honey Sunburst and play it through a Boss GT-10 Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal, into either a '65 Music Man RD-112 or a Fender Hot Rod DeVille 2X12(loud). I can go from acoustic to electric with a step on the pedal. When playing as an acoustic, I use just a little delay and chorus. When playing electric... anything goes!
Construction is what you expect from Taylor: top notch. One of the best guitars in terms of aesthetics and build. Their attention to detail on this guitar is unrivaled so far. One drawback is that it is "neck-heavy". When you turn the neck loose, it will pull the guitar down. You don't really notice it while playing. Nothing to keep you from purchasing a T5.
It definitely sounds better plugged in. The guitar doesn't have a great unplugged acoustic sound. It's decent unplugged but not great. It will still sound as thin or thinner as any other unplugged shallow body guitar out there (shallow bowl Ovations, etc.). It is still okay for a practice session without an amp.
Though once you plug it in, everything changes. You'll just have to hear it to believe it. Regardless of what purists say about deep-bowl "acoustic" tone, the acoustic sound on this guitar sounds amazing considering it's thin body. I agree nothing beats a true acoustic Taylor, but this comes pretty close.
Aside from the price, another drawback, is that on the "electric" settings, since the guitar is a hollowbody, if you use effects boxes since they amplify the "noise" the pickups generate overall. Also, any place you "touch" on the body of guitar will be heard, especially if you touch near the pickups. If you wear a bracelet... take it off. So while perfectly acceptable as an electric, it will not be as "quiet" as one no matter what you do. But then again, spruce tops are said to resonate better (which is a drawback in an electric setting), the Maple would probably be a good choice if you plan to do a lot of electric guitar playing with the T5. Also, with the very sensitive pickups, you can't get very close to your amp without screaming feedback!
